Supporting a Living Laboratory for Grid Innovation
UC Riverside’s long-standing research and development in energy innovation demanded more than just clean power, it required a system that could integrate into a dynamic campus-scale microgrid. As part of the SIGI initiative, SolarMax Tech delivered a 502.32 kW solar PV system comprising 2,184 U.S.-manufactured panels and three Solectria PVI-60TL-480 inverters. This system now supplies clean energy into a larger network that includes over 2 MWh of battery storage, 51 EV charging stations, and infrastructure supporting a fleet of 20 electric transit buses. These integrated assets form the foundation for advanced energy research, vehicle-to-grid experimentation, and real-world decarbonization strategies.
Challenge
Integrating Clean Energy into Research-Driven Operations
UCR’s ambitious sustainability strategy required scalable energy infrastructure that could deliver more than efficiency; it needed a flexible, modular system to support research, transportation, and campus-wide carbon reduction mandates.
Solution
High-Efficiency Solar, Microgrid Integration, and EV Support
SolarMax Tech installed a 502.32 kW solar system as part of a broader integrated grid strategy. By contributing directly to SIGI’s clean energy platform, the system supports EV charging, battery research, and smart grid development on one of the most advanced university testbeds in the U.S.
Outcome
Powering a Real-World Energy Laboratory
With SolarMax’s system feeding into the SIGI network, UCR now operates a hybrid clean energy campus with real-time energy monitoring, 2.2 MWh of battery storage, over 51 EV chargers, and transit electrification efforts serving 20 solar-powered electric buses, all supporting a future-ready, zero-emissions infrastructure.

Overview

The University of California, Riverside is a recognized leader in climate-conscious research and operational transformation. Through its Sustainable Integrated Grid Initiative (SIGI), UCR has developed one of the nation’s most advanced energy testbeds, combining solar, battery storage, thermal energy management, and electrified transportation into a functional campus-scale microgrid. As a core contributor to this living lab, SolarMax Technology provided a 502.32 kW solar system comprised of over 2,000 high-efficiency U.S.-made panels, powering critical facilities while supporting bidirectional EV charging, microgrid islanding, and energy storage applications.

But SolarMax’s involvement at UCR extends far beyond this installation. As part of a shared commitment to regional innovation and academic excellence, SolarMax has donated more than $1 million to support the Inland Empire’s clean energy transition. This includes $800,000 worth of donated solar panels for SIGI, as well as a $200,000 endowment to the UCR School of Business — funding scholarships that continue to impact future clean energy leaders. Over the years, SolarMax has hosted UCR delegations at its headquarters, sponsored international economic development missions, and supported student development through internships in finance, marketing, and operations.

Through this multi-dimensional collaboration, SolarMax has helped position UCR not only as a top-ranked sustainable university within the UC system, but also as a national model for integrated clean energy systems, community partnership, and applied research.
