   Solar FAQ

Do I need batteries with the system?
Batteries are an option in solar systems. You need them only if you want to have electrcitiy in case of emergencies or if you're not tied to the utility grid. They will however add additional costs to the system.

Are the panels fragile?
No, the panels are not fragile as they are made with tempered glass. They have been tested by shooting a 1in. hail at 50 mph at it. Panels have also been installed in the Artics as well as the deserts.

How much solar electric power do I need to power my home?
There are many factors that contribute to the power usage of your home. Your electricity bill will give us the best idea as to how large of a system you need to power your home.

Do the panels need to face south?
South facing panels produce the most power but east or west facing ones are decent as well, though not as good.

Do the solar panels need to be mounted on my roof?
No, panels can be ground mounted as well. However, roof mounts are generally more cost-effective.

How long does it take to install a PV system?
It usually takes 2-3 days for a residential installation and anywhere from days to weeks for a commercial one. The noise levels during installation are minimal and most of the work is done on the exterior of your building. Therefore, disturbance is not an issue.

What happens when the utility has a power outage?
If you do not have a battery bakeup system, the solar energy system will not produce electricity when a power outage occurs. This is a protective measure to ensure personnel from utility companies are not electrocuted when working on the lines.

What is Net Metering?
Net metering is a regulatory ability to receive credit for the solar electricity your system generates. Your utility meter will have the ability to spin backwards if your utility company participates in net metering.

How does the solar power get stored?
Your solar power is not stored if you do not have a battery pack. You basically send electricity you produce in the day back to the grid and take it back at night, when your system is not producing.

Do I need to install a new roof before the solar panels are installed?
Do I need to install a new roof before the solar panels are installed?
Since solar systems last for more than 25 years, your roof should be in decent condition before the panels are installed. We will advise if you roof needs to be replaced.

What happens if the panels are shaded?
Shading is a major issue for most solar energy systems. Small amounts of shade can cause great reductions in your production. Our designers will avoid shaded regions, where possible, during the layout process.

If I sell my property, what effect does PV have on the sale price?
A recent study from a credible financial institution reports that a home value increases by 20 multiplied by the annual savings as a result of the solar system. If your system saves you $1000 a year, your home value increases by $20,0000.
